The UFI code explained for small makers
What the 16 characters mean, who must print them, and how to get yours free in five minutes.
Annex VIII CLP · Article 45 · EU-wide
You pour candles, cut soap, mix detergent or tint paint — and suddenly the EU wants a 16-character code on your label and a dossier at ECHA. We turn that into an afternoon task: free UFI generator, PCN dossier prepared for 79€, and a guide so you submit it yourself in about 10 minutes.
No account needed for the generator. Your formula data never leaves your browser.
Who this is for
The duty in article 45 of the CLP Regulation applies to a 3-person candle studio exactly as it applies to a multinational — but only one of them has a regulatory affairs department. UFINotify is for the other one.
The obligation in plain words
16 characters that link your product to its exact formula. Generated from your VAT number + a formulation number of your choice, with ECHA's public algorithm. Generate yours free — it costs nothing and takes a minute.
Composition, hazards, packaging, category, markets: the poison centre notification is a structured dossier submitted through the ECHA portal — so the emergency doctor answering a 112 call knows exactly what is in your product. Preview every field with our wizard.
Change the fragrance, the supplier or the concentration beyond the allowed ranges and the notification must be updated before the new batch ships. Our 9€/month watch tells you when — and prepares the update.
Selling on Amazon or Etsy?
Amazon's dangerous-goods reviews and Etsy's EU compliance checks routinely request the UFI and proof of notification for scented candles, wax melts, diffuser refills and cleaning products. No UFI usually means a suspended listing, right in the middle of your best season.
Getting compliant is cheaper than a single week of lost sales: generate the UFI free, and if you want the paperwork done, we prepare the dossier for 79€.
How it works
Enter your VAT number and a formulation number in our generator. You get a valid 16-character UFI with the official checksum, ready for your label. Client-side, private, unlimited.
Send us your safety data sheet and label. We build the complete dossier in the official PCN format — composition, EuPCS category, hazards, packaging, markets — and send it to you reviewed and ready. 79€ per mixture.
You upload the dossier with your own ECHA account following our step-by-step portal guide. The submission, the account and the ownership stay yours — you stay in control, always.
90-second check
Five questions, an honest answer. Based on Annex VIII to the CLP Regulation — all its application dates (2021, 2024 and the 2025 end of the transition period) have now passed.
Clear prices, no consultancy fog
REACH consultancies charge 500–2,000€ per mixture for the same notification. Our tools do the heavy lifting, so you don't pay for anyone's marble lobby.

We prepare your dossier in the official PCN format; you submit it with your own ECHA account in about 10 minutes with our guide — so the submission, the data and the ownership are always yours.
What lands in your inbox
Your 79€ buys a document set in the exact structure of the PCN portal: product identity and EuPCS category, packaging types and sizes, classification and labelling from your SDS, toxicological information, and the composition with concentration ranges that Annex VIII actually allows.
Want to see the structure first? The free PCN wizard builds a printable summary of your own dossier — every field the portal will ask for, in the portal's order.
Straight answers
The UFI (Unique Formula Identifier) is a 16-character code — for example N1QV-R02N-J00M-WQD5 — that links the product on the shelf to the exact formulation notified to the poison centres. It is generated from your VAT number plus a formulation number using a public ECHA algorithm, and it must appear on the label of hazardous mixtures sold in the EU. Full explanation in our blog.
Scented candles and wax melts are mixtures: if the fragrance makes them classified as hazardous (very often skin sensitising, H317), they need a notification and a UFI. True soap that washes the skin is a cosmetic and follows the cosmetics rules (CPNP) — no UFI. Laundry soap, cleaning bars and detergents are not cosmetics and do fall under Annex VIII. We wrote a whole guide on this.
Selling a hazardous mixture without notification and UFI breaches article 45 CLP. Inspectors can stop sales and order withdrawal; marketplaces delist the product. Fines are national — in Spain, for example, serious infringements run from 6,001€ to 85,000€. The practical risk usually arrives earlier: a marketplace suspension or a distributor asking for papers you don't have.
One UFI = one formulation. The same formula in different sizes or under different product names can share a UFI. A different fragrance, colourant or dilution is a different formulation — it needs its own UFI and its own notification. Our pack of 5 exists precisely because makers rarely have just one formula.
Print UFI: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX clearly visible, legible and indelible on the label, near elements like the barcode or the hazard pictograms. For mixtures used only at industrial sites it may go in the safety data sheet instead. Minimum font size rules of your label still apply.
Yes. The UFI algorithm is public — ECHA documents it in the UFI Developer's Manual — and our generator implements it completely, checksum included. It self-tests against known reference codes on every page load, and your data never leaves your browser. Before you send labels to print, we still suggest pasting your first UFI into ECHA's official tool as a one-minute double check; careful people check twice, and we like careful people.
